A few days later, Tricia is attempting to explain how to delicately operate the temperamental espresso machine. “This damn thing should’ve been thrown to the curb years ago, but Megan can’t even contemplate parting with Grammy Lois’ favorite toy.” She bitches as the machine groans and spits out the brownish sludge.
I lean over and whisper in her ear, “Does anyone actually drink that crap?”
Shaking her head, she looks around to make sure Ms. Hears-it-all isn’t around before laughing. “Nope, they only come here for the baked goodies. Everyone knows to make coffee at home and leave your cup in the car. Old Bertha doesn’t produce anything worth drinking. She hasn’t in probably three or four years.”
Megan picks that moment to breeze in from the kitchen, so Tricia looks at me and silently signals to zip my lips. After winking at Tricia, I turn to Megan. “How’s the baking coming?”
She looks suspiciously between me and Tricia for a second before she answers, “I’m all done, and Cara helped me clean up the mess. Harden is on his way to get me, so I’m going to head home early if you guys can handle everything.”
Before either of us can answer, the cafe door smashes against the wall, and we all turn to see Harris Kane prowl through the doorway. “You seem to have something that belongs to me.” He looks straight at me as he advances around the counter and throws me over his shoulder.
“Hold it there. I’m not sure how things are done in Ohio, but we don’t walk into establishments like cavemen and claim women around here.” Harden happens to walk in as I’m staring down at Harris’ tight ass and demands, “You put Ellie down, and we can discuss your claim like regular human beings.”
Harris’ chest vibrates under my thighs as he refuses. “Why don’t you move out of my way? Ellie and I will discuss this ourselves.” Out of the corner of my eye, I see Megan and Tricia looking back and forth between the men like ping pong balls. When Megan mouths, “Wow,” to Tricia, I realize these two aren’t going to help the situation.
The walls of the cafe flash by my eyes as Harris moves toward the stairs. Deciding that this has gone on long enough, I pinch his ass and call back to Harris, “You need to put me down.” When the big lug ignores me, I pound on his rock-hard backside and get a grunt for my effort.
“Stop your struggling. We’re just going somewhere to talk,” he growls over his shoulder, and Harden clears his throat behind us.
“I think she would like to talk here,” Harden cuts in, and I get dizzy as my want-to-be abductor spins around.
The room twirls around again when Harris suddenly sets me back on my wobbly legs and throws his hands up in the air. “You want to have this out here?” I never said that, but Harris is so focused on Harden, he isn’t giving me a chance to say anything.
